John E. Stillwell collection, 1633-1916 (bulk 1670-1840).

Dr. John Stillwell's collection of manuscripts pertaining to the Stillwell family and others. They mostly relate to residents of Middletown (N.J.) and Gravesend (Brooklyn, N.Y.), but also to people from Flatlands (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Portsmouth (R.I.), Freehold (N.J.), Shrewsbury (N.J.), Shoal Harbor (N.J.), New York City, and other places. The material includes deeds, patents, returns of surveys, bonds, agreements, military commissions, letters, receipts (including an 1808 receipt book of the physician William Stillwell), bills, accounts, wills, memoranda, inventories, indentures of apprenticeship, depositions, etc., concerning members of the Wall, Emans, Grover, Van Brunt, Bowne, Hartshorne, Stillwell, Lipit, Leeds, Holmes, Seabrook, Cottrell, Tallman, Taylor, Applegate, Cowenhoven, Forman, Mott, Rapelje, Van Mater, and Coffin families, as well as other persons. Many are documents made out to or by the overseers of the poor of Middletown (N.J.), during 1750-1800, and pertain to the keep of illegitimate children, orphans, and poor people; some are indentures for servants and apprentices. Others relate to sales or leases of property, settlement of estates, litigation, sales of slaves, and matters of local public concern. Letters to Alexander, Alexander H., and Isaac Coffin deal with the Nantucket (Mass.) bank robbery, ca. 1810.
